Guinea and Mali drew in their last game (Group D) at the Africa Cup of Nations. The 1-1 scoreline meant that both teams had identical points (3), identical goals scored (3), identical goals conceded (3) and an identical goal difference (0) at the end of the group stages.
As per AFCON rules, a draw of lots (Yes, a DRAW OF LOTS!), was conducted at the Hilton Hotel in Malabo to decide which team advanced to the quarterfinals. The last time a draw of lots was needed at AFCON was in 1988
Guinea won the draw of lots, and Mali were therefore sent home. Guinea qualifed as runners up in Group D behind Ivory Coast, and will play Group C winners Ghana in the quarterfinals.
