Both William Saliba and Ibrahima Konate had a forgettable first leg against Croatia. Arsenal’s Saliba was retained for the second leg, but LFC defender Konate made way for Bayern’s Dayot Upamecano in the heart of defence.

L’Equipe thought Upamecano was the pick of France’s defenders, giving him a 8/10 player rating, the joint highest alongside Michael Olise.

Saliba received a 6/10 for his performance as did Manchester City’s Gvardiol.

Here is a look at how some of the big French newspapers rated Les Bleus’ players following their 2-0 defeat against Croatia in the first leg of their Nations League QF on Thursday night. France lost 2-0 to Croatia in Split, with Ante Budimir and Ivan Perisic scoring for the hosts.

French sports paper L’Equipe wasn’t pleased with Les Bleus’ performance in Split, giving them a team rating of just 4.1/10.

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate got the worst player rating in their books, with a 2/10 for the CB. His defensive partner, Arsenal’s William Saliba, only fared marginally better with a 3/10 rating. Konate was replaced at half time by Bayern’s Dayot Upamecano.

On the Croatian side, Man City defender Josko Gvardiol got a 7/10, which was the highest player rating on either side (shared with some other Croatian players). His MCFC team mate Mateo Kovacic however only got a 5/10 from L’Equipe.

Here is a look at how the Portuguese and Croatian papers think their respective national sides will lineup for tonight’s Nations League clash.

Both O Jogo and Record concur in most aspects of the Portuguese starting XI except one- O Jogo think Joao Neves will start in midfield while Record are of the opinion that Bayern’s Joao Palhinha will partner Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha in the centre of the park.

The others players in the XI are common in both papers- Diogo Costa in goal; Nuno Mendes, Inacio, Ruben Dias and Nelson Semedo at the back, and Ronaldo, Rafael Leao and Bernardo Silva upfront.

In Croatia, 24Sata is of the opinion that they will try a 3-5-2 formation tonight against Portugal. Zlatko Dalic last employed it against Bulgaria back in 2022 and is expected to try it in the light of injuries to Stanisic and Juranovic.
