Antonio Conte’s first Derby Della Madonnina in charge of Inter resulted in a comfortable win for the Nerazzurri over bitter rivals AC Milan. Both the goals came after the interval- one through Marcelo Brozovic’s deflected effort, and the other through Romelu Lukaku’s header.
Milan coach Marco Giampaolo chose Andrea Conti to replace the suspended Davide Calabria at right back and also gave young Rafael Leao his first start of the season.
The Rossoneri came into this game on the back of identical 1-0 wins over Brescia and Verona, but it was the Nerazzurri who started a stronger note. Their pressing game almost elicited a mistake in the 11th minute, with Lautaro Martinez nearly capitalising from a misplaced pass from Ricardo Rodriguez to Milan keeper Donnarumma.
Inter then had two very good opportunities, with Romelu Lukaku’s shot saved by Donnarumma (although the Belgian could’ve certainly finished better), and Danilo D’Ambrosio hitting the woodwork from point blank range.
Minutes after the D’Ambrosio miss, Milan thought they had scored through Hakan Calhanoglu, but it was disallowed as the ball had struck Kessie’s elbow before falling to the Turkish star.
Inter, whom many people reckon might be dark horses for the Champions League this season, especially with Conte at the helm, then had the ball in the back of the net- D’Ambrosio’s stunning bicycle kick was saved by Donnarumma, but Martinez was on hand to poke home from close range. Fortunately for Milan, VAR came to their rescue, ruling the Argentine to have been offside.
Milan’s best and perhaps only real chance of the game came in the 39th minute when Suso caught Sensi in possession and dribbled forward on the counter. The Spaniard should’ve potentially passed to an unmarked teammate om his left, but chose to go himself instead, and Kwadwo Asamoah did enough to get a block in.
Inter had been the dominant side, and were rewarded for it with a goal just after the interval. From a free kick, Brozovic’s shot took a deflection off Leao and past the helpless Donnarumma. VAR was again called into action, but this time, they ruled in the Nerazzurri’s favour.
Lukaku’s header from Barella’s cross sealed all three points for the visitors, who could’ve had a bigger margin of victory had Politano and Candreva both not been denied by the woodwork later in the game.
It means Inter are the only team with a 100% record in Italy this season, and with only one goal conceded from four games, they also boast of the best defensive record in the league.
