Sol Campbell has become the first manager to leave his club for the 2019/20 season in England’s top four divisions after Macclesfield Town announced today (August 15, 2019) that he had parted ways with the Silkmen.
Financial issues off the field were said to be the reason for Campbell’s frustration- the players had considered boycotting their final game of the 18/19 season in protest, and Campbell himself hadn’t allegedly been paid for the last four months.
Macclesfield had started their 19/20 campaign with a loss to Exeter City and a win over Leyton Orient. The 3-0 victory over Orient was, interestingly enough, also his biggest win as Macclesfield manager during his short stint at the club (8 months).
Before Campbell took over in the 2018/19 season, Macclesfield had 13 points from 20 games that season (0.65 points per game). From the remaining 26, with him in charge, they took 31 (1.19 points per game)
Campbell’s record at Macclesfield Town in all competitions as manager
Played 29- Won 8, Drew 10, Lost 11
In League Two- Played 28, Won 8, Drew 10, Lost 10 (35 Goals scored, 38 conceded)
