For the first time in the history of the World Cup, we had four Arab teams participating in the tournament. Unfortunately, none of them were able to progress to the round of 16, a bit disappointing given the expectations from Hector Cuper’s Egypt, who had Mohamed Salah in their ranks. Morocco played well, but were unable to make it out of a group that featured former World champions Spain and current European holders Portugal. No African team made it to the round of 16 either, with Japan and Mexico the only representatives from outside the traditional strongholds of Europe and South America.
