This George Calintaru penalty miss vs Steaua Bucuresti (GIF VIDEO BELOW) saw things go horribly wrong for newly promoted Juventus Bucuresti in their Romanian top flight game over the weekend. With the FCSB (Steaua) leading 2-1, Juventus Bucuresti were awarded a penalty in the 96th minute and George Calintaru attempted a Panenka, which was easily saved by opposition keeper Florin Nita.
The shattered Calintaru (you can see his team-mate admonish him after the miss) allegedly broke his hand later after punching a wall in frustration, and JB coach Daniel Oprita, who incidentally was a member of the Steaua side that took on Middlesbrough in their 2006 Cup (now Europa League) semifinal, resigned shortly afterwards.
Juventus Bucuresti are from Bucharest, but their game was played in Ploiesti, some 70 odd km away, because their original grounds apparently don’t meet the standards required. They won promotion from the Romanian second division in 2016/17
