Dinamo Zagreb picked up the rather unwanted record of being the only team not to score a single goal in the group stages of this year’s Champions League competition. The Croatian champions, in a tough group with Juventus, Lyon and Sevilla, lost all their games, which could probably be excused, but failed to score even a single goal, thus joining Deportivo (04/05) and Maccabi Haifa (09/10) as the only teams not to score in the group stages of the modern Champions League era.
However Deportivo in 04/05 conceded 9 goals and Maccabi in 09/10 conceded 8 while Dinamo this year have conceded 15.
Dinamo’s president is Zdravko Mamic, who was arrested last year for allegedly taking commission from sale of the team’s players to foreign clubs.
Dinamo made well over 40 million euros in sales this summer with the likes of Marko Pjaca (Juve), Josip Brekalo (Wolfsburg), Marcelo Brozovic (Inter) and Eduardo (Chelsea) leaving the club, but practically nothing of that was invested back in strengthening the squad, leading to the team struggling to compete in Europe’s toughest club competition.
