Truly depressing outcome.
Strachan after a good start to his Scotland career has hit the skids.
The damage was done with the recent defeat in Georgia. As soon as you then become reliant on other teams results you are clutching at straws.
As to the future I would be surprised if Strachan walked away. His stock has been damaged by finishing 4th in this group and at nearly aged 59 he might not get a better job.
With a world cup campaign in the near future and 2 games against England he might see it as a chance to redeem himself. What is the alternative?
The fact that other home nations are doing well has not helped his case and has only increased the frustration and anger amongst the tartan army.
However the fact remains Scotland are lacking in quality and have been for a long preiod of time.
I might in the next few weeks be proven wrong but I think Strachan will be given the go ahead to lead to campaign to qualify for Russia, but at this moment in time that seems a long , long way ahead.
Scotland fans will just have to content themselves cheering on the rugby team for now.
Like I said at the start, truly depressing.
