Wayne Rooney became England’s record goal scorer in the just concluded fixture against Switzerland, with his penalty at Wembley taking him to 50 goals and lifting him above Sir Bobby Charlton (49) as the nation’s record goal scorer. Manager Roy Hodgson presented Rooney with a special 50 jersey after the game to commemorate the Man Utd striker’s achievement. Rooney normally wears the No.10 jersey.
A special edition replica jersey has been made available, similar to the one presented by Hodgson to Rooney
Rooney is no doubt proud of his achievement as his family will be.
However all this fluff surrounding the guy is getting tedious.
Whatever next Wayne and Coleen dinner plates.
The guy has never cut it on the biggest stages and that is where the greats shine.
Comparing Rooney with Charlton is like comparing Cilla Black to Barbara Streisand.
The pundits drooling over his achievements right now will be the first to slaughter him when England again get found out in France by teams who are superior technically.
Despite this I am sure there will be no shortage of takers for these novely jerseys.
Will they be worn with pride after the Euros though, I doubt it.
50 years on from that glorious day at Wembley, I am still waiting for an explanation as to why we have won nothing since. I want to hear from all the so called experts the real reason for that shameful statistic.
Stop hyping ordinary players and have a good hard look in the mirror.
You cannot under achieve for 50 years.
