Total mismanagement of the situation by Van Gaal showing he does not understand the importance of the Christmas period in premier league football. He takes offValencia instead of Mata and switches Ashley Young to the right wing after he had his best showing all year on the left wing. Valencia is solid and penetrating on the right side in old United tradition and Di Maria could have easily slotted into Mata’s position, the latter having had an awful game full of mishaps. Leaving Van Persie on with Falcao would have certainly given United a serious shot at the win. The manager lost this game with poor decision making.
Most people, even I, initially thought Agbonlohor should have got a yellow card but upon review he did not slow down when going in for the tackle and hit Young at full speed. Being late and trying to pull up or out of a tackle when you know you have blown it warrants a yellow card. He kept going.
