  1. I suppose this referee will be as hated in Manchester as Tom Henning Ovrebo was in London not too long ago.

  2. dubious as that decision was, some amount of blame should be copped by nani.

why would one go for such a reckless studs up challenge in a crucial european game and that too against arbeloa, whom we know can be a crybaby on the floor.

  3. spectacular by modric.eventhough got a crucial mistake by a referre r.m is dominating and had a fascinating control than m.u……if man u win also didnt think ,they can compete for the quater based on their performance last night.

  4. Though it was a shame a red card was awarded on such a controversial call, Real Madrid took advantage of it and sealed the game. Better luck next time i guess…

  5. The nature of the tackle counts folks. Whether he nailed Arbeloa or not is secondary.

On a secondary note, very shocked to see Wazza not start. Signs of the exit door for him?

  6. It wasn’t a red card but nani knew there was someone behind him, he shouldnt of lifted his leg that high…

  7. “The best team lost”

The comment from Mourinho says it all.

Clever from him. he’s beaten United and earned some brownie points with the fans with that comment, marking him as a potential successor for SAF.

  8. LOL! You think too highly of your club.

You can’t recognize a back-handed compliment from Mourinho? Try and think of similar comments he made when he was at Chelsea.

  9. The red card was controversial only because it left one team with ten men; red cards are always controversial in that sense. But the rule book is clear: “dangerous plays” are red cards, regardless of the player’s intention. Roy Keane– the ex Man U captain– said it best: “Regardless of Nani seeing Arbeloa, studs up, at the chest level, is a red card every-time” There are 22 players on the field, so you must always assume someone is near you on the field.”

  10. @mathew, so what does a player do in the case of an overhead kick?

not attempt it, because there is sure to be someone near him as mr keane so eloquently put it?

  11. There is a certain degree of discretion that referee’s must exercise. This is exemplified by the fact that, with incidents involving overhead kicks, some refs don’t call them, while others call a dangerous play (the latter occurring less frequently in recent years, but not because a change in the rule-book, but due to the refs discretion). But the criteria for red cards is more stringent. The “dangerous play” must make contact with the opposing player. When Nani went up for that challenge, he exposed himself to a red card. A risk that materialized as soon as he made contact with Arbeloa. It’s true, the ref could have given a yellow. But it was also within his authority (as conferred by the rule-book) to give him a red card. It seems harsh. But Nani is too blame for exposing himself.

Also, we must keep in mind the purpose of the rule book when it comes to red cards, that is, insure the safety of the players that we adore so much– the players that make this beautiful sport possible. Many times we have to wait for one of those kicks to seriously injure someone to be reminded why we have those rules to begin with. At times, perspective can be clouded by emotion. And that’s fine. Fut is an emotional sport. But when all is settled, we must be objective in our analysis, for the good of the sport.

  12. @Gonzalo
Comparing an overhead kick with a high kick tackle is completely different. Shame on you to consider them one in the same.
An overhead kick is only done when the ball is clearly in the player’s possession or personal vicinity. A high kick tackle, showcased by Nani for example, is done in competing to win the ball for the player.

The ref made a good call. Straight red. Too many players get away with tackles like that IMO.

  13. if Nani had a previous warning for a challenge, then it might have made sense (not taking into account whether he intended to injure arbeloa or not at all). a yellow might have been fine given the circumstances prevailing.

he gave a yellow to Arbeloa for a similar studs up challenge against evra (minute 37)

look at nigel de jong vs xabi alonso in the world cup final. de jong’s was nastier and intentional imo and wasn’t punished.

the issue with such a decision is that it spoils the game for everyone (except for real and mcfc fans maybe). The momentum clearly shifted to madrid after the red.

even the french and the german press are calling it a harsh red

  14. if real madrid were winning 4-0 at that stage, there would have been a few eyebrows raised but the decision would not have felt so harsh as it did while leading 1-0 and real looking nowhere like scoring.

  15. Yes the momentum during the game shifted. Yes perhaps the red card was “harsh.” But it doesn’t make it wrong. It’s within the rule-book. The fact that the rule-book is not applied consistently is a different issue. But i’m not conceding that Arbeloa’s tackle on Evra was similar. Arbeloa kicked Evra slightly above the knee, and nowhere near the chest. As to the de-jong tackle on xabi-alonso during the world cup, that should have been a red card. To argue that simply because De-jong was let go scott-free, then you must also let Nani off the hook is illogical, and would result in complete disaster within the sport. You can’t right a wrong with two wrongs. Plain and simple. We must strive for more uniform enforcement, not less compliance with the rule book.

  16. The game context should not matter when making decisions. A red is a red in a 1-0 game and a 4-0 game. Player safety is just as important in either context.

  17. the red card against nani from the referre was wrong the decision made to quickly man united was the better team on the field and ronaldo said he coming come to old trafford and jose moriho said the better team lost GLORY GLORY MAN UNITED

  18. Hvent yuh seen dat nani serioulsy give kick to arbeloa r yuh kidding he take how much pain yuh dnt knw btw an owsm win by real madrid modric owsm stick 😀 hala Madrid

  19. some talking points:
1.People who say nani’s challange was a straight red know nothing about football rules…he went for the ball,so did arbeloa….and it was a yellow in case it hurt arbeloa. But that red changed the game.
2.If someone says madrid dominated bcoz they had possession, they i wud like to remind that possession dont win matches(remember Barcelona?).The match was evenly balanced..i wud rather say,a bit better chance creation from the reds….Ramos lucky, got away as some calls against him were never heard…
3.Nani(as long as he played),Giggs, and Welbeck were good….Welbeck could have sent home some numerous re-bounds that came to him from Lopez and the cross bar(vidic header)…..for Madrid Higuain seemed back in action.
4.Man of the match of this tie is also a goal-keeper,this time its Diego Lopez..

  20. Ferguson & Man U gets away with type shyt all the time against teams in EPL… just couldn’t Hack it in Champions League. Nani’s Tackle deserved a Red card so should Rio after the game Clapping in ref’s Face Like a Retard. HAHAHAHA

  21. @Mathew, player safety is understandable but the laws ought to be similarly implemented.

consider a keeper who comes out to punch away a corner. his aim is to clear the ball and he isn’t looking whether there is another person he could potentially hurt. if he makes contact with an airborne defender, the latter is done for. something similar happened between lopez and vidic in the game, but went unpunished.

as for the overhead kick comparison, i do think it is valid. when a player sets himself up for an overhead with plenty of players in the box, there is a clear risk element involved. (not outside box like zlatan)

i think nani’s offence comes under serious foul play which seems to be defined thus

Any player who lunges at an opponent when challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs with excessive force and endangering the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play

was that a “lunge”? lunge seems to suggest intent which i don’t think nani had.

as for the 1-0 and 4-0 bits, it obviously hurts as a united fan more at 1-0.

  22. Ridiculous! How is that a red he was watching the ball and didn’t even know the stupid Real Madrid player was there. What about a red for arbeloa for being a massive tool

  23. That wasnt a red card, it was a freaking yellow, nani did not intend to stud arbeloa. If people say it was unintentional but according to rules of the game it should be red, then what about khedira? he unintentionally handled the ball in the penalty box, should it not be a penalty? what about the other unintentional stuff players do? shouldnt it be a foul? Nani was not even given a warning, he was sent off straight without being able to explain himself. thats plain bullshit.

  24. Although Nani did not meant to stud arbeloa, his tackle was high up to the chest level (according to the rule-book) and resulted in red card bc player’s safety is very important in football.best luck next time.

  25. Massive blow for a stunning match the refree seemed baised….glory glory mighty united letsgo for a double…

  26. if anyone watches the tackle properly, you can see nani pushing off arbeloa when he saw he made contact.that shows intent. and niway lik keane said that tackle was way too high..so he deserved red…stop your whining manu fans…u get favored by referees in the epl everytime…atleast now u knw how it feels for other teams wen decisions go against you

  27. also, please see this from former referee

It was an error of judgement by the referee. When he did catch him, and there’s no doubt he did catch him, I think he’s caught him on the inside of his arm.

“He certainly hasn’t caught him in the ribs as Arbeloa’s gone down showing. For me I think the referee has seen the foot out, I think he has seen the reaction of the Real Madrid player and he’s pieced it together and made the wrong decision.

“He’s made a very, very strong decision but he’s over-egged it for me. I think a yellow card would have sufficed.

  28. What you mean error by referee? So meaning it is not a fault? But it is a fault just the referee given red instead yellow. So consider a harsh decision. But you can see Nani’s leg reaction after the kick.

  29. y red n not yellow if indeed ref finds it dangerous play. to me the ball headed towards nani wth onrushing opponent coming from behind beyond nani sight , he tried to gain control of the ball a contact ensued. nani had ball at his right foot and not his right boot direct to onrushing opponent. the most ref cautions nani. I feel ref is ardent fan of RM n wants em thro next round coz nani was playing well. Bad decision by ref definitely n it killed otherwise a fantastic game !

  30. nani came on clean b4 the red card debacle so whats the necessity 4 a send off ?? akin to a hearing judge weilding life sentence withoit parole to an atempted murder case . 60 over thousand crowd at old trafford saw the bad judgement m ref cant lie. this will haunt him for the rest of his life when officiating football matches. Yes i believe he’s an RM supporter !UEFA, FIFA do something !

  31. the ref cheated man u by not calling for the hand ball on madrid’s defenders hand. name: nathaniel jebboe jr

  32. i dont see any single rsn y d ref shld issue a red card in d game, afta al man u had so many defiled penalty. Ref was simply induced to react frm d reactions dat came frm arbeola afta his contact wit nani. He reactd so quickly wit wrong discretion and as a result gave tactical mourinho opportunity to do dat wc he cldnt do wen d game was 11 against 11. He jst spoilt a fantastic match.

  33. Hahahahahahahahaha can’t stop laughing at fergie’s face
When that girl nani gets sent off what a picture. Bout time
the reff had the bottle to send someone off for united.
    YNWA 5 times!!!!

  34. It wasn’t even a good game. Fantastic game my arse!
Remember when shelvey got sent off at anfield??? Yeah well
There you go you no what it feels like now. YNWA 5 times!!

  35. I see it from a different point, d ref did not give nani d red card bcus of d extension, but nani try to play on d ref as if abaloa was d one who play d foul. let me remind u, when man u met with chelsea at d stanford bridge, when Torres hate d man u defender n fell trying to play on d ref, d ref issued him a straight red card. so, for me d ref gave d red card bcus nani try to play on him. What can be done to monkey, the same can be done to baboom.

  36. Real Madrid was playing with 12 players, it was shameful act of Referee, very disappointed move of the referee, we condemn win of RM, shame shame referee

  37. You mean YAWN J….same old scouse. How many premier league titles have the pool got? Used to have more than us right?? guess its only time before united get more champions league titles…tell me, what have liverpool done lately? Sweet fanny Adams!!

    Snoooze

  38. MU gt wt dey desrv!!nw dey frgt wt hppnd 2 da game against chalsea in premier league. Torres n evens#nw dey knw fair ply#da fact is dat madrid won da game*dat tackle by nani wa dangerous so dar is only 1 punixment 4 dangerous tackle 4 dat kind 1…
