Sheffield Wednesday keeper Chris Kirkland was attacked by a fan during his club’s 1-1 draw against local rivals Leeds United on October 19, 2012. Wednesday stopper Kirkland, who had just conceded a goal in the 77th minute to Michael Tonge, was punched in the face by a fan who ran onto the pitch and then disappeared into the stands

Kirkland fell to the floor after being struck in the face and was immediately attended to by physios and medics. The fan in question was quickly identifed on Twitter as Aaron Cawley, who was reportedly first banned when he was just 16 at Elland Road.

Wednesday boss Dave Jones called for the Leeds fans to be banned for away games and called them “vile animals” while Leeds boss Neil Warnock called for the fan in question to be put into prison.
