  1. One of the strangest international football games I’ve watched. It was like a high school under-seventeen side playing an adult second-division side about to be relegated. And I’m wondering if there is some rule that you have to be a giant to play for Germany or is it just that the Greek players were unusually small?

And Greece couldn’t find a better goalie for the national side? The guy was allergic to catching and holding the ball, even for weak shots at goal. And when he came right out trying to punch the ball away but nowhere near it, he was rightly punished with that third goal.

  2. I wonder what the Greek fans have to say

Their best period of football was probably in the leadup to their first goal and otherwise, they simply didn’t get men forward

  3. @ Bryan, I think Sifakis ( the Greek keeper) kept spilling the ball because he was injured in the buildup to Germany’s first offside goal. They should have subbed him after that, but kept him on and he was clearly not himself

  4. Are you commenters drunk? That game should have been 8-0, that was the best Germany has looked in years and Greece looked like a slow womens team.

Blame the goalie?? The POSSESSION in the first half was 81% to 19%.

The highest ive ever seen in a half of football.
Play that game again and Ozil doesnt miss point blank, Klose doesnt miss 2 more goals…all fluke misses…

That game should have been 6+ goals…

I have never seen a playoff round game so lopsided, Germanys bench would have won easily.

  5. it was a joke that greece even made the quarters, they are absolutely terrible. the scoreline should have been even greater, well done germany for getting rid of those speds

  6. greece played v.poorly in first half

only time they got the ball on the counter, there was one, at max two in german half and players were isolated and gave ball back to germans

  7. Where are the Greek supporters who said they’d upset Germany after the win over Russia?

Face it, Russia would have done a better job against Germany.

I’m not anti-greek, but their football was poor

  8. Archaic folks:

“Bryan, I think Sifakis ( the Greek keeper) kept spilling the ball because he was injured in the buildup to Germany’s first offside goal. They should have subbed him after that, but kept him on and he was clearly not himself.”

Thanks for that. I was also thinking there was something wrong with him. If so, it was a serious mistake not to substitute him.

I also agree to an extent with WL. That game just didn’t look like an equal competition between national sides. The Greek players were dwarfed, both in size and energy by the Germans, who were given acres of space in which to move while the Greeks hardly saw the German goal. At one point I was thinking that Greece would be seriously humiliated by a massive Germany score. It only didn’t happen because of the incompetence of some German players.

Does Greece collapse when the captain can’t play?

  9. Look i read all of the above comments and here is what i have to say :
    1) Greece didn’t went to the quarter-finals by accident, that is because they won Russia (Russia 0 – 1 Greece) a country that is a thousand times bigger than Greece. After that in the first game (Greece – Poland 1-1) Greece scored a goal that was obviously not offside => youtube(dot)com/watch?v=89iIJC61dqM,later on the game against Chech of Republic which Greece lost 2-1, another offside goal? i don’t think so you can search it on any highlights of the game and try to be honset with yourselves. So having said that Greece could have moved in the next phase 1rst and not 2nd.
2)Germany 4 – 2 Greece, frankly speaking Germany deserved to win by far, BUT i think that in the end Greece did make a decent appearance in Euro2012 considering a) that their team was based on young players,b)Greece is a country of 11 million people of which 2 million are immigrants,c) in the qualifiers Greece didn’t lose not even a single game and lastly d) stupid mistakes from the Greek side and the arbitration that could have easily overcome.
Thats my personnal point of view after having played (Soccer or Football) for 13 years .

  10. Greece managed to put 2 goals past Germany. What does it matter how high the possession is or how attractive the football skills? If Greece can score twice against the Germans, anyone can beat them.

  11. BARCELONA AND REAL MADRID WERE THE BEST TEAMS BUT THE WINNER WAS CHELSEA!! IT DOESNT MATTER IF U PLAY GREAT BALL, BUT THE ACCURACY TO THE TARGET!!
MAYBE THEIR FOOTBALL WAS POOR BUT ATLEAST GREECE PLAYED TO THE QUARTER FINALS!!!!

  12. our football wasn’t poor …germany was very very good and they deserved the victory.. ?? ?????? ??? ??? ??????? ????????? ??? ??????? ?????

  13. our football wasn’t poor …germany was very very good and they deserved the victory, but we are proud for our football players because they because they have greek soul…..greece we love you

  14. Germany deserve to win this game.

    They played better. No doubt.
From the other hand. Greece might not be the best team in the world but we must admit they went too far again. Do not forget it is a small country with poor league. And at the end.. they made 2 goals in the best Germany i ve seen so far!!!

Germany probably will win the Cup.

  15. The Greeks looked like from Medievial times…unshaven, wild beasts…….while the Germans looked well greased machines……….even the goal the Greek scored , they cheated because Samras hold back the German defender . Luck Greece, the final score could have been 8- 0.

  16. In every season there must be a reason. The Greek team proofed their best but the Germans were more better

  17. WELL WE MANAGED TO MAKE THIS A INTERESTNIG GAME WITH OUR FIRST GOAL THAT TIED THE GAME..WELL GERMANY WAS BETTER SO THEY DISERVED TO WIN..BUT YOU CANT SAY WE DIDNT TRY!! 4-2 IS A OK SCORE FOR ME.. CONSIDEING THE DIFERENCE OF THE 2 TEAMS..PLUS WE ARE NOT DONE YET OUR BASKETBALL TEAM IS COMING FOR THE GOLD METAL AT THE OLYMPICS AND YOU CANT STOP THEM ;]

  18. Well, it was a great game, kudos 2 d german team and 4 d greek team, “there’z always a next time.”

  19. International team – vs greek, all i can say.
Try play with germans next time. they had like what.. 1 german? maybe 2?
özil? turkish player, kheidara? klose? these guys germans? lol…… just cuz you give them passport dosent make them germans. its funny really… i can name more if you want just tell me.
id say greece played against PLAYERS not germany, but good players. and they still managed to make 2 goals. so ty. germany got like 2-3 good german players, rest arent germans, just freaking admit it. its funny when özil going home speaking turkish and telling they won with germany. xD lmao.

  20. Good job Germany… Good job Greece. I am not going to start saying like the “greeks look like medieval times because they don’t shave” or that germany are “nazis”… i am not immature like that. Germany deserved and HAD to win… they are just unstoppable in my opinion and they have high expectations from their fans (including me).. but i loved Greece’s football too… I was kind of scared when Samaras scored the tie, but thankfully germany won. In my opinion it wouldn’t surprise if greece won another euro in recent years to come. I love football because there are no guarantees of who will win. Of course germany is right no on their best moment but that doesn’t mean that greece or any other team will never beat them…..

  21. Good job Greece for trying….. winners in my book…..spanakopita for the family to celebrate….

  22. Dear Mr. Xarry, Sami Khedira’s mum is German, Boateng’s mum is German, Gomez’ mum is German, Oezils’s dad migrated to Germany at the age of 2 (!), Klose and Podolski were born in Poland but have German roots. O. k.: Lahm and Schweinsteiger both are Bavarians and maybe Hummel’s grandgrandgrandgrandfather came from Italy with the Romans. Anyway: What is the message of your post? For which country should these young people play? I can say: That’s Germany how it is today, and I am proud of it.

  23. England would be easiest gift to Germans in the semi final but Italy 🙂 reminding me of WC 2006 semi final 🙂

  24. Xarry June, You should do your homework before you post rubbish here. It is a well-documented fact that all those players you mentioned were either born in Germany, or were brought over to the country when they were young children of immigrant parents. They were not ‘naturalised’ i.e. offered citizenship to be ‘mercenaries’ for Germany. The country’s huge population, and wealth of footballing talent makes the hiring of foreign talent totally unnecessary. If the likes of England are serious about winning any major trophies, they are the ones who have to import foreign mercenaries. With the large number of foreign players plying their trade in the English Premier League, the national team should recruit the many uncapped ones who have more composure taking penalties and possess far superior technical skills than the lumbering Stone Age Englishmen.
