  1. How on earth did the Russians not qualify?

And Greece will get hammered by Germany in the quarter finals.

  2. hahahahahahahahahaha when greece have there backs against the wall they somehow find a its the greek fighting spirit they are battlers! no matter wat happens against germany, greece has over acheived there is no pressure on us now, i think germany will win the tournament so to go out to them is no shame! Hellasssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

  3. Dear Anton, keep calm and enjoy football. I had heard thousands of people like you in Euro 2004.

  4. Because Greece has character, creativity and great defense, and it should have been at least 3-0 Greece, and they cancelled a legitimate penalty for Greece, and finally Greece has proved more than once before that no matter how much you push them down, they will always get back up and face the fight ahead, even when everyone speaks bad of them

  5. Cuz they s*** and so do you watch ur mouth little boy
Clearly u don’t know anything about soccer do go
Buy a soccer ball and kick it against the wall
Til it comes back n hits u in the **** and hopefully
Knocks some sEnse into you . , HELLAS

  6. “Greece has character, creativity and great defense”

Character yes, defense yes ( during qualifying atleast!- haven’t seen much evidence at the Euros)

Creativity?- Don’t think so, Creativity results in goals and Greece don’t have a single playmaker of the calibre of Arshavin

  7. All you haters can keep on hating, but it doesn’t change anything. We’re in the quarter-finals, whilst Russia are packing their bags.

  8. @ Jay, first criteria to separate teams on the same number of points is head to head.

Greece beat Russia, so Greece go through

  9. But russia beat czech 4 1 and czech beat greece so how can table be settled on head to heads surely has to be goal difference so russia should be through

  10. Match-fixing has become a very negative phenomenon in sports, football especially. In the current event, European Championship, two recent fixed matches where result was pre-determined are Ukraine-France and the last, Greece-Russia. It’s time to initiate investigations against match-fixing.

  11. For those they’ve read history, yesterday’s victory should not come as surprise. History shows that Greeks always stand up & fight especially when cornered. This is how they’ve managed to create a huge history and there is more to come. Now it’s time to change Europe’s destiny for the shake of all of its citizens. Hellas !!!!!!

  12. I agree with @kevdoh. As a neutral supporter in this group, you want to see the most attractive football played by the best teams. If you have a superior goal difference to another team who scrapes through on a 1-0 game, it surely isn’t the best result for the game or the fans on the whole.

  13. @Kev,

Czech finished with six, Russia and Greece finished with four. Czech win the group.

So head to head is only between Russia and Greece, in which case Greece go through because of their 1-0 win on head to head

  14. Don’t forget that Greece had bad decisions against them by referees in all three matches. Especially against Poland, the referee helped the Poles not to lose, and was 80-20 for them, against the Czechs the ref refused a goal to Greece and yesterday we all saw what happened. Frankly Greece were the best inthe group, not the second if referees were OK. That ref attitude though threw out Poland and Russia!!!

  15. First up, I would like to point out that the game is called Football and not Soccer! If the Americans want to play soccer at home and in the World Cup whilst the rest of us play Football, then fine – but the game is and remains FOOTBALL! The Brits invented it – they get to give it its name. It seems, however, that Chris has some serious anger-issues going on!

Greece was fantastic. I am neutral in this group, but considering Russia’s recent military threats to the EU over missiles and their terrible behaviour on so many national and international fronts, especially with regards to human rights and fixed elections, I was happy to see a small bankrupt country stuff them up… I also wonder how the Russians could show so much nationalism and arrogance in Poland – a country that they occupied and abused for so many years. Also, I wouldn’t totally rule Denmark out tonight against Germany… They have shown themselves to be giant killers before.. I will be shouting for Germany (NO I am not German), but the Danes, like the Greeks, have a lot of fight in them.

Ben, the Germans do not decide on Greece going bankrupt! And, for the record, Greece is already bankrupt 😉 also, if Greece falls then so does Germany. I have lived and worked in Germany for almost 20 years, and the Germans love sport, but do not hold grudges over it, unlike a lot of other countries, including my own (England).

I was convinced Russia would win – they didn’t! I am convinced England won’t win – so maybe, just maybe? 🙂

  16. A Russian reporting in. We’re very sorry to lose this battle, but that was totally our fault we didn’t play better against Poland and Greece, Greece especially. One can say Poland’s success was firstly slightly random and secondly helped by the referee, but we’ve been really weak against Greece. On the subject of fans: weren’t the Polish fans rude towards us as well? I bet they were. I don’t in any way justify our fans bad behaviour (of course, only some Russians are like that!) but don’t be one-sided. First, so-called “occupation” has nothing to do with football. Football is apolitic, isn’t it supposed to be? Russian fans go to Poland and all they see is hatred towards them. That’s terrible our brother nation was so tough at us. Russian people (at least most of us) do never mean any harm to other nations, no matter what others say and what the powers do. Some of our fans are crazy, well, I believe this takes place everywhere. But every time I see the “damn Russians” comments, I feel pain in my heart, because we never go “damn Europeans”.

  17. I believe that what these boys did was something extraordinary and believe or not they are though.Germany is a great team but dont forget that greece in 2004 eliminated FRANCE(ZIDANE) AND CZECH REPUBLIC(NEDVED)!!!!!!
So please do not underestimate anyone…..

  18. I personally feel like most of the other neutral parties commenting on the way that Greece has gone through to the next round. On paper if you tally the points using Win Lose Draw GF GA GD Total you will have a result. Based on that result one can determine the stronger side and in this group I believe Russia should have gone through.

  19. idiots greek players played with soul and power of well! stop takling about germnay!when we invented dimocrasy you were invented fire!so give f**kin respect! we are proove to europe that we can overcome any opstacle all this years!and as you can see about the game we beat russia!so wait fot thursday and then speak!???? ????!

  20. This hatred for Greece always amazes me.
“Yea Greece gave us Democracy,Organized sports,Arts,History,Philosophy, Science, western civilization and the right to exist (they defeated the persians).. but who cares.. Germany gave us 2 world wars, Mercedes,Audi,Bmw,Vw.. oh..and that Beethoven guy.. Greece sucks”… “Greece was the first country to win against the axis in wwII but.. who cares? Greece sucks.”
Euro 04: “Greece defeats the hosts and favorites Portugal. Greece sucks” “Greece advances to the next round. France will make ’em suffer” “Greece knocks out the holders France. The Czechs will make ’em regret that” “Greece are in the final. This time they have no luck against Portugal” “Greece are the European champions. They are the worst ever, Greece sucks etc”
Strangely in a Europe so fond of slogans against racism, most Europeans treat Greece worse than they treat the muslim immigrants that take their jobs in their own countries.

  21. I believe the best teams should go through – Russia overall played better than Greece in their matches and it should be decided on goal difference and not head to heads – it is disgusting that Greece are going through on that basis. As a neutral for that group it would be better for the game if the RIGHT team i.e. Russia who had a superior goal difference had gone through. No offence to any Greeks intended.

  22. alexander you are just totally burn brain!you even cant accept some thinks…also greece has her own team with greek players…especially germany is the most redicellous national team(ozil, gomes) and more others…please respect some thinks….but natalie you have also to accept the fact that greeks wanted the match more than russians…

  23. That point about the German team looks unwarranted fighter

Ozil and Gomez both spent the vast majority of their childhood in Germany, and that makes them as German as anyone else.

  24. Hi All – Australia calling – we are very multicultural here – big greek, italian, german and british populations here. We are isolated from Europe physically and emotionally and as new generations are born we become further detached from our ancestral homelands. It is amusing to see the bickering and hateful remarks European nations exchange – somehow thinking one is better than the other. Funny to see the passion for a game of football manifest itself through racist remarks. Collectively Europeans have contributed so much to the world but as individual nations there is not one better than the other. Me – I enjoy the passion and committment of players and there is nothing better than seeing players fight hard and show true sportsmanship at the end of the game.

  25. Canada is terrible in football so all you f@*kers are lucky we’re not in this tournament ‘cos we would’ve just won the whole thing(sh*t seems to be the new good now a days).
p.s. best of europe hockey v Canada = we win.

  26. Hi all from Australia. Interesting comments. Firstly let me commend the Greek side on their tenacity and courage in never giving up the fight till the end. This same spirit has always manifested throughout their history, at Thermopylae, during the Byzantine Empire and WW2. I personally think that the Greek team is not as gifted as many of the other teams and doesn’t play football that is pleasing to the eye nevertheless their determination and courage against the odds is admirable. Let me all remind you of a quote from Hitler when the Greeks beat back the Italians and then heroically resisted the combined forces of Germany, Italy Albania and Bulgaria on one extended front before capitulating.

“For the sake of historical truth I must verify that only the Greeks, of all the adversaries who confronted us, fought with bold courage and highest disregard of death.”

Speech in Reichstag, 4 May 1941

Greece should use their History as a basis for building the Integrity of the nation and ask yourself we have a proud history but what are we doing now to build up the nation and what legacy do you want to leave behind.

First and foremost this is football and all Greek fans should be proud of their result; congratulations on getting through a result thoroughly deserved. However the true spirit of a nation comes from the integrity to perform with character and grace, so whatever the result I hope that the Greeks and Germans play with respect towards each other and with honour a character that both nations hold dear. Take care everyone and all my best wishes from Australia.:)))))))

  28. Fighter you got my whole post wrong. What I meant to say is selfexplained in my last sentence. There is too much racism in Europe and that fact is loudly displayed in the demeaning comments made about the Greek national football team. Strangely, considering Europe got its name from a Greek myth. Yea Greece is not the most impressive team to watch, not even close, but Greece plays with the same rules as every other team and makes it through, that should be enough to prove their value. Chelsea had to find a way to overcome the “superiority” of barcelona and bayern, they won the C.L. and that makes them superior to my eyes. If the most impressive or the most expensive always won we wouldnt need all the big tournaments, we wouldnt even watch football, these tournaments are made to prove on the pitch who is the best, not in numbers. Thats what makes ’em exciting. Btw, England played much more defencively than Greece and I find Barcelona’s and Spain passing game very boring.

  29. hey russians, remember WWII?…ya thats right. we did it again because we can.

freedom or death as our flag stands for.

as for germany, even hitler couldn’t stay away from praising our passion and fighting to the death spirit so watch us do it again and laugh in the face of ‘the monster invincibility’ germany thinks they have. we’ve always loved laughing at those germans. ha

  30. wow and poeple say the dutch are wastfull alteast they lost to really good teams vs russia loosing to greece and poland that is just sad

  31. This is all Kharma.
The worst and most racist fans in the world; Russians, Ukranians and Poles f… off home.

  32. For me Spain probably will win, but don’t discount Germany and Italy.
    But my heart says Greece.
No Slavic nation will win and that is good. All they do is beat their chests about how good they are and how bad Greece is.
But where is your silverware slavo’s.
Your fans are rubbish and deserve to leave with their tails between their legs.

  33. A few days have passed but still cannot console myself of the Russians’ loss to the Greek. Actually I missed out on watching the live match that day. But I have a big question here, may be a bizarre one, it’s not the fact that Russia have lost 0-1 to Greece, but can any one tell me please on what ground was the exit gain to quarter final judged?? The fact is that Russia and Greece were in the same situation overall (equal score), BUT ON GOAL DIFFERENCE, the Russian were much better with 2 positive goals at hand while the Greek had none. An ‘away go goal’ was not the case absolutely, so how was the victory decided – I asked many people but no one could answer my question, please, please tell me… Many thanks..

  34. @ Tiam, Greece beat Russia, so Greece went through

Head to head is first criteria, so Greece qualified and not Russia

  35. Hi everybody! Big day today I suppose. I might sound a bit naive here but just wait & see what will happen tonight against our friends Germans. They do not stand a chance against us and you know why? cause they just don’t have the guts to defeat us. Greece will play with their harts and even without Karagounis the victory is there waiting for us ! Hellas !!!

  36. Thanks for the reasoning, but I’m afraid (sorry) I still cannot understand this ‘head to head’ logic. Does this mean that only the last game that is needed? How then all their previous match efforts count? I’m not necessarily a Russian but it’s not fair, be it whoever team. Personally, I think the normal way to distinguish a winner in this situation should have been the goal difference. In ten years time, if anyone looks at the final score sheet, I’m sure they will be the Russians who deserve the win – it’s simply incomprehensible. Remember, the ‘golden goal’ rule, which was subsequently abandoned decade ago, because it was simply not fair.

  37. I’ve logged on to find out why I have to cross Russia off the quarter finals on my Euro chart and replace with Greece (as I was of the understanding Russia would have gone through on goal difference) and, apart from being completely gobsmacked at some of the awful comments I’ve read, I haven’t yet seen an understandable explanation as to why this is – how on earth did that happen? Makes no sense to me whatsoever, what was the point in Russia beating CR with four goals I ask…? Come on England! (haha just want to throw that one in the pot as I’m sure that will generate some retaliation from you haters…boom! Go get happy!)
