This contentious Micah Richards handball vs Liverpool ( see video below) saw Liverpool being awarded a penalty by referee Phil Dowd in the second leg of their Carling Cup tie on January 25, 2012. Richards’ handball against Liverpool allowed Steven Gerrard to equalise from the spot after Nigel de Jong had put City ahead. The game ended in a 2-2 draw, with Liverpool winning 3-2 on aggregate in the tie.

City’s players were anguished because the ball took a deflection from his leg onto his hands, while Liverpool maintained that the player had obstructed the ball from going forward to a LFC player.
