This Vincent Kompany red card vs Manchester United ( see Kompany sent off video below) reduced Man City to ten men in their FA Cup clash against United on 8th January 2012. Kompany’s red card against United came immediately after Wayne Rooney had scored the opening goal.
Kompany’s dismissal against Man Utd was for a challenge on Nani. The Belgian defender’s red card v Man Utd came in the 12th minute of the game. Chris Foy was the referee who sent Kompany off. Manchester United eventually beat Manchester City 3-2 in the fixture.

Utter injustice- not a red at all
the ref killed off the game
Sorry Chris Foy, you’ve made a massive blunder in there
refs a twat
mustve been paid by saf
another game overshadowed by a shi* piece of refering
It was real red despite of Nani jump from the Kompany legs
In every topsport today they view a moment at the slow motion on tv to avoid such great mistakes of referees.
So we have to think that football is a marginal sport.
Another ref in Man U’s pocket- well done Mr.Foy
It was a two footed challenge in which both feet left the ground…..By the laws of the game that is a red, contact or no contact
Unlucky but he’s airborne and as lenny’s stated, that’s red sonny
I luv man utd but referee is over pampering them that is why they don’t wan2 buy good mid-fielder
Clear red. And this not from a Man U supporter. That tackle sure would have left Nani with some broken bones had contact been made. But to his credit, mature post-behavior from Kompany after the send off. No arguments and complains, just walk off the pitch.
This type of tackle has a 30% chance of snapped leg.
Kompany knew it when he did and he hoped to get away.
For all those people that are saying that he is playing the ball, don’t play football themselves.
This way of diving towards the feet of your opponnent is intentionally and aimed at feet.
Nani jumps, and lives…
If your throwing your whole body at someone’s ankles and the ball is close by and you happen to touch the ball. Do you play the ball?
This game has clear rules…just read and if you are smart enough to interpret, let me know if you still differ in opinion.
I totally agree with lenny.
BTW I favor City and I hope they win the title, but not like this…
I’m a Chelsea fan, so naturally I hate both teams.
I also play as a central defender/wing back.
However, I can’t understand how anyone is complaining about this red card.
It’s a two footed lunge, yes his right foot gets the ball, but his left foot is a good 5 or 6 inches off the ground, with his studs up and nowhere near the ball.
The fact that he wins the ball and doesn’t make contact is irrelevant. You can’t tackle however you want just because you win the ball.
More importantly, if it had made contact it would have sent Nani flying and no-one would complian about the decision.
And we wonder why players go down so often? It’s because the fans and referees are so inconsistent with the rules. The ref was spot on this time though.
Good decision, and I’ll bet my house the ban does not get repealed.
Am I mistaken or was there a brief shot – at the end of the game – of a smiling Sir Alec Ferguson putting his arm around the referee, Chris Foy? A worrying thought…
There’s no point saying it definitely wasn’t a red, looking at the law, he was up in the air with both feet off the ground, both sets of studs showing. Granted, he’s managed to win the ball cleanly with Nani leaping over safely, but say Nani hadn’t been able to jump over, the momentum Kompany had going could have caused Nani real injury, now I’m not complaining, he’s an annoying little girl like Ronaldo was, but was definitely a stupid challenge.
I am a Liverpool supporter so I have no bias towards Man. U nor Man. City however – the video clearly shows Kompany went in with one foot to the ball and did not hit the Man U player who didnt even raise an objection. Good football is being overshadowed these days by big money and small minds. Even racism … no one should be sworn at whether white, black or brown whether born in England, Africa, wherever. What is so different about such offences when you can just imagine the ****** coming out of SIR ? Alex Fergusons Scottish Mouth against other managers, players, linesmen and even his own players. Its high time for the third referee but when the sport is goverened by a tool like Sepp Blatter is it any wonder that it is going to the dogs ??? Referees …. if you want to make some money – do it legitimately and if you make a mistake – be man enough to admit it.
insanity of the referee should investigated ,how can destroy such a game that early.to me city won
kompany is two footed….but it turned out to b an extremely clean taking of the ball…….if u watch the slow mo carefully nani hasnt actually made it to the ball and it may b marginal but kompany appears to b first to the scene of the action therefore nani being second has to avoid…….the ref was certainly biased by rooney who shud b investigated as it is nothing to do with him and he always seems to b the first to intimidate referees…..mayb red mayb yellow either way its a sad day for football…….might as well make it a no contact sport altogether……
Kompany went in with two feet, he was off the ground and he had studs showing on both feet, had Nani not avoided the challenge it could have been real nasty, so that alone should be enough to constitute a sending off.
The fact he won the ball and didn’t make contact is a point of contention but if you follow the rules of the handbook, if the player makes a two footed challenge and is not in control of himself or the ball then whether he makes contact with the ball, player or both it constitutes a red card.
There really should be much of an argument, the fact it was so early on did however spoil the game.
Two feet tackle. what was the intention? to injure Nani. Has it been a common tactic by Kompany? Yes, and many other city players. This is not the last Red, many more are on the way! Mancinni train your boys on Rules as well! Foy that was super, it will reduce injuries to many players.
Double stamp results to a direct red card without negotiation, an attempt to break opponents likeness of games. mystery! mystery!. He deserved.
Two feet high boot tackle = A Red Card.
Same as Liverpool’s Jay Spearing tackle, won the ball cleanly but two footed tackle. I personally think yellow but all I can say is that at-least there was a bit of consistency with both decisions getting the same treatment!
Jones Hand ball at end of the game should have been 3-3 before the full 90 was up!
fu** this ref man !!!wht a piece of shit ……
unnecessary red card!!!!!!!
FU** HIM!!!!!
fantastic
fu** u ref
Everyone who says that this is Not a Red Card… Needs to take a look from a different angle…
Or open your fukin eyes.. 2 foot is 2 foot… and Just because Nani did the obvious thing to
save his leg/knee/ancle/career does not make it any less dangerous… Kompany has a history
of 2 foot challenges… Go check your records… FA Cup Final…. Stoke v ManCity….
That day Kompany got away with it… Ask any other Stoke supporter about unfair….
Well Done Reff… “Not this time Kompany”
@Josh … There’s nothing uncontrolled about Kompany’s tackle which is why this is not a foul. Nani has left the bal too far in front of himself and available. This is not reckless, and it is not even two-footed. The second leg is well behind the first in entering the tackle and in location. I’m sorry, but for me you can make a much better case as to this not even being a foul vs being a red card.
A massive problem in the game today is these soft cards. Surely we want to keep players safe, but the decision making by officials on challenges such as these are exactly why diving, embellishment, and intimidation of the official exist in our game so prevalently. This is a contact sport. That is a controlled, precision, and legal challenge for me. Note that I am neither a United or City supporter.
He deserved it.
what if he’d broke his legs?
Wonder what Kompany’s feeling after seeing Glen Johnson escape punishment?
No one has responded to my observation that – after the game, Fergie spoke to Chris Foy in his ear, with a simultaneous thumbs-up, smiled, then gave him a friendly pat on the back as Foy walked away. So what was all that about? I am a photographer – I have photographs of the episode!
MR CHEAT CHRIS FOY YOUR NAME WILL REMAIN IN FOOTBALL HISTORY AS CHEAP REFEREE WE ALL CAN SEE IT IN YOUR FACE SO HAPPY TO GIVE THE RED CARD AND SO QUICK, NANI WAS SUPPRISED HIMSELF OF THE RED CARD HE FORGOT EVEN TO FALL DOWN OR ACT THAT HE IS HURT, IM SURE EVERY ONE REMEMBERS THE HAND OF MARADONA AND THE MORROCOAN REFEREE WE ALL WILL REMEMBER MR CHEAT CHRIS FOY EVEN WE WILL NOT FORGET YOU MR CHEAT
