Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has officially announced Robin Van Persie as Arsenal’s new captain. The Dutch striker, who wore the armband in Arsenal’s 0-0 draw against Newcastle United on Saturday, succeeds Cesc Fabregas as captain of the North London club following the midfielder’s move to Barcelona.
Wenger had this to say about Van Persie
He is a leader through the way he plays, through his attitude and through his desire to win.
He’s been at the club a long time and he’s a technical leader as well
Van Persie will not captain Arsenal in tonight’s Champions League qualifier against Udinese as he is suspended, but will take over the reins for their clash against Liverpool this weekend.
Wenger also announced that Van Persie would be assisted by Dutch defender Thomas Vermaelen.
