Last night, Inter Milan’s Mariga MacDonald Wanyama became the first player from his country to compete in the UEFA Champions League. The 22 year old midfielder came on as a substitute for Wesley Sneijder in the dying moments of Inter Milan’s 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Work permit issues came in the way of Mariga’s move to England, not once, but twice. The first time was in 2006, when Harry Redknapp wanted to bring him to South Coast outfit Pompey. The second was as recent as two months ago, when Man City wanted to sign him from Pompey. After failing to get a work permit in time to join City, he opted to move to Italian giants Inter on Feb 1, 2010.
