England striker Emile Heskey has said that he had no reason to complain if Fabio Capello chose to start with Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe in the crucial World Cup qualifier against Croatia on Wednesday.
Heskey started alongside Wayne Rooney in attack against Slovenia on Saturday, but wasn’t really able to make an impact on the game. On the contrary, Defoe, who came on as a substitute, scored England’s second goal, and there are many who believe that he should start ahead of Heskey.
Heskey said that he needed to play more regularly at Aston Villa if he wanted to retain his place for next season’s marquee event in South Africa.
Heskey said, “Jermain has done brilliantly. Every time he comes on the pitch he scores a goal. No, no you can’t complain (if he gets selected). In his last four games or so he’s got four goals or five goals. Those are the statistics.”
