Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has said that UEFA were right in punishing Arsenal striker Eduardo da Silva for his dive in the Champions League game against Celtic. The Croatian international fell dramatically in the box in the second leg at a crucial juncture of the game, and referee Manuel Gonzalez pointed to the spot, much to the dismay of Celtic keeper Artur Boruc and his team mates.
Ferguson said he agreed that “something had to be done”, but added that Arsene Wenger was right in accusing UEFA of setting a dangerous precedent. He said, “I agree with Arsene, I would ask the same question ‘is it going to happen to everyone?”
Arsenal are set to appeal against Eduardo’s two match ban. If they are unsuccessful, the striker will miss the games against Standard Liege and Olympiakos in September.
