Sunderland have made Paraguayan international Paulo da Silva their second signing of the 2009 summer transfer window. The right back joins the Wearsiders on a three year contract from Mexican club Toluca.
Da Silva, who is also the captain of the Paraguayan national team, has had stints with European clubs before Sunderland. He has previously played for Perugia, Venezia and Cosenza in Italy.
Spurs also showed late interest in Da Silva, but the Black Cats managed to beat the London club to his signing.
