Manchester United have accepted a £80m (€93m or $131.5m) bid from La Liga giants Real Madrid for Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo.
Ronaldo, FIFA’s World Player of the Year for 2008, was heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid last summer, and United even complained to FIFA accusing Los Merengues of “unsettling” their player.
The relationship between Real and Manchester United seemed to have soured, but the re-emergence of Florentino Perez, along with Ronaldo’s “own desire to leave” ( stated by United as one of their reasons for accepting the bid), have made the world’s biggest football transfer possible.
Should Ronaldo accept Real’s terms, the fee Real will pay for him will dwarf the £56m they paid for AC Milan playmaker Kaka last week.
Manchester United bought Ronaldo from Sporting Lisbon in 2003 for £12.2m. He has since then gone on to make over 190 appearances for United, and has scored 84 goals for the Red Devils ( a ratio of nearly a goal in every two games)
