Bayern Munich comfortably beat VFL Bochum 3-0 in the Bundesliga on Saturday to keep themselves within striking distance of leaders Hertha Berlin. However the defending champions remain four points behind Hertha, who needed a fortuitous Andriy Voronin goal to beat Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayern, who started the game without influential playmaker Franck Ribery, were dealt a further blow when striker Miroslav Klose was forced off the pitch half an hour into the game because of a foot injury.

However Brazilian Ze Roberto gave them the lead minutes late with a stunning left footed shot that Daniel Fernandes did well to get a hand to, but could not stop from going in.

Jose Ernesto Sosa, who had replaced Klose earned a penalty for Bayern early in the second half after being brought down by Marc Pfetzel in the penalty area. Pfetzel was sent off by referee Michael Weiner, but Podolski missed the resulting spot kick.

Down to 10 men, any chances Bochum harboured of getting back into the game were killed on the hour mark. The ball came to Bastian Schweinsteiger on the left, and he slid it into the path of full back Philipp Lahm. Lahm controlled it expertly, and fired it right footed past Fernandes to make 2-0. Bayern boss Jurgen Klinsmann could not hide his delight on the sidelines as his side carried on from where they had left in midweek against Sporting.

Bayern got a third right at the depth when some poor marking from the hosts allowed Martin Demichelis to poke home from Podolski’s pass.
