Manchester City put one foot into the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup when they beat Aab Aalborg 2-0 in the first leg of their Round of 16 clash at the City of Manchester Stadium.
Felipe Caicedo opened the scoring in the eighth minute. He collected a pass from Robinho on the edge of the box and then showed his strength by outmuscling Michael Jakobsen before slotting past Karim Zaza.
Andreas Johansson and Caca both went close for Aalborg next before City scored again.
Shaun Wright Phillips collected Stephen Ireland’s pass down the right, and skipped past Patrick Kristensen before unleashing a fierce right footed strike into the top corner of the net. Despite the angle that Wright Phillips chose, there was little Zaza could really do to stop the ball from going in.
City had several opportunities to add to their two goals. Referee Alain Hamer chose not to award City a penalty after Robinho was hacked down by Australian defender Michael Beauchamp. Nedum Onouha failed to head in an Elano corner and Pablo Zabaleta’s long range effort was stopped by Zaza.
Aalborg tried to get an away goal, but it was all in vain. To add to it all, Thomas Enevoldsen got booked for a tackle on Wright Phillips that sees him miss the next leg in Denmark.
