Final score : Bayer Leverkusen 4-2 Bayern Munich ( Tranquillo Barnetta 54′, Arturo Vidal 61′, Patrick Helmes 70′, Stefan Kießling 90+2’/ Lucio 72′, Miroslav Klose 74′)
Defending champions Bayern Munich were knocked out of the German Cup last night by Bayer Leverkusen in a six goal thriller at the LTU Arena in Dusseldorf.
The match sprang to life in the second half, and Bayer scored three goals in the second half before Bayern hit back through Lucio and Miroslav Klose to set up a tense finale. However Stefan Kießling’s injury time winner ensured that there would be no fairy tale come back for Jurgen Klinsmann’s men.
Hamit Altintop had the best chance of the first half, forcing Leverkusen keeper Rene Adler into a fine save.
Swiss winger Barnetta gave Leverkusen the lead in the 54th minute, with a stinging shot from the edge of the box after collecting Lukas Sinkiewicz’s pass.
Seven minutes later, Bayer doubled their lead as Arturo Vidal powerfully headed home Barnetta’s corner past a helpless Rensing.
Michal Kadlec tore down the left in the 70th minute and squared it for Patrick Helmes to tap into an empty net as Bayer seemed to have put the result of the game beyond doubt. But there was still some drama to come- Bayern had not given up, despite being three goals down with just twenty minutes left.
Brazilian defender Lucio pulled one back for Bayern in the 72nd minute from Massimo Oddo’s cross after Adler misjudged the flight of the ball and allowed him to head home.
Miroslav Klose headed home Bayern’s second from Franck Ribery’s cross as the defending champions reduced the deficit by another goal.
Unfortunately for Bayern, Kießling killed the game off in injury time. With everybody in front, Demichelis tried to head the ball ahead at the half way line. It ricochetted off Angelos Charisteas, and the Greek forward set the unmarked Kießling up for a simple finish to give Leverkusen a deserved 4-2 win.
