A late goal from Turkish international Sabri gave Galatasaray a stunning 4-3 win over Bordeaux in the second leg of their round of 32 tie. Bordeaux, who had drawn the first leg 0-0 in France, seemed sure to emerge winners on the away goals rule before Sabri’s injury time strike left their dreams shattered.
The home side fell behind after just 11 seconds. Galatasaray defender Fernando Meira failed to intercept Diego Placente’s long ball, and David Bellion took advantage and sent his shot through the legs of the advancing De Sanctis.
Souleymane Diawara had a lucky escape in the 12th minute when he nearly put Arda Turan’s cross into his own goal. Fortunately for Bordeaux, the ball hit the top of the bar. At the other end, Chamakh forced a save from De Sanctis.
Galatasaray finally equalised through Arda Turan in the 42nd minute. Baris Ozbek sent his ball to the edge of the area, and after Baros had tried to shoot, Turan fired home, with Henrique on the line failing to stop the ball.
Australian winger Harry Kewell, who had come on as a substitute for Topal, smashed home an unstoppable left footed shot into the top corner as Gala took the lead.
Brazilian Lincoln missed the opportunity to put Gala 3-1 ahead, but he atoned for it a few minutes later, setting up Turan at the near post to give Gala a two goal lead.
Marouane Chamakh pulled one back for Bordeaux in the 72nd minute, and Cavenaghi slotted in their third after De Sanctis had spilled the ball while attempting to collect an opposition free kick.
But there was still drama to come. Lincoln whipped in a last ditch corner, and Bordeaux scrambled the ball away. It fell to Sabri, whose right footed shot took a deflection off Diawara into the bottom corner.
Sabri raced down the pitch in delight, and the 19,000 strong crowd at the Ali Sami Yen Stadium erupted too as Bordeaux looked on in shock and despair.
