Aab Aalborg scored three times at the Riazor to knock Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna out of the UEFA Cup. The Danish side, who led 3-0 from the first leg at home, won 6-1 on aggregate and now face Manchester City, who dumped out FC Copenhagen, in the round of 16.
Deportivo would have had to produce an incredible performance to have any hope of coming back into the tie. It took them thirty eight minutes to break the deadlock, with Sergio Gonzalez opening the scoring with a long range shot.
Aalborg replied almost instantaneously through Luton Shelton, who headed home the equaliser in the 41st minute. Shelton had the opportunity to put Aalborg ahead earlier, but was denied by a last ditch tackle from Diego Colotto.
On the stroke of half time, Deportivo’s tormentor in chief in the first leg, Anders Due, set up the second for Andreas Johansson. No sooner had Deportivo recovered from the shock of going behind than Aalborg scored once again. Aranzubia saved Shelton’s effort, but could not stop Thomas Enevoldsen from volleying home the Danish side’s third goal.
Try as Deportivo did to make a contest of it in the second half ( they would have to score a whopping six additional goals to win), they could not and the home side’s misery was compounded in second half injury time when they had Pablo Álvarez sent off for his second bookable offence.
