Portsmouth FC have announced that they have parted company with manager Tony Adams with immediate effect. Adams, 42, took over from Harry Redknapp on a two and a half year contract in October 2008, but lasted only twenty two games at the South Coast club.
One wonders whether Adams would have remained in the hot seat had Portsmouth not lost 3-2 to Liverpool on Saturday after being 2-1 ahead with five minutes to go. Former Arsenal defender Adams was clearly dismayed at the way his side allowed Liverpool a way back into the game twice, and even kicked out at the chair near him in frustration.
Portsmouth have also sacked first team coach John Metgod and have appointed Paul Hart as their caretaker manager.
Adams was able to guide Pompey to only two Premier League victories in his tenure at Fratton Park. His first win as Portsmouth manager came against Sunderland in early November, and the second came against Blackburn Rovers at the end of the same month. Pompey were knocked out of both the UEFA Cup and FA Cup under his tenure.
Are young managers in the Premiership finding the transition from players to managers difficult? We’ve seen Roy Keane, Paul Ince and now Adams- all distinguished players in their own right, fail as managers this season. Your thoughts?
