Tottenham Hotspur recall on loan keeper Ben Alnwick

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has recalled Ben Alnwick from his loan spell at Carlisle United. Alnwick was brought to Brunton Park by ex Carlisle boss John Ward on a one month loan in October, and made his six appearances in his four week stay at the club. Caretaker boss John Abott has said that he would have liked Alnwick to stay for another two months, but understood the circumstances in which he was being recalled to White Hart Lane.

Alnwick, 21, was signed by Tottenham from Sunderland in January 2007 for £900,000. He has not made his first team Spurs debut yet, and has also had loan spells at Luton Town and Leicester City.

Spurs currently have Heurelho Gomes, a £7.8 million summer signing and 37 year old Cesar Sanchez as their two goalkeepers. But Gomes has not been at his best, and the error prone Brazilian’s frailties were again highlighted against Fulham last week- Harry Redknapp’s first defeat as Spurs manager.

Spurs have also parted company with goalkeeping coach Hans Leitert, and have brought in 1984 UEFA Cup penalty shootout hero Tony Parks to solve their issues.

Alnwick has made one appearance for England at U-21 level. Last October, he had his loan spell at Luton cancelled after an injury to then Spurs number 1 Paul Robinson. Alnwick once saved a penalty from Robbie Keane when Sunderland played Spurs in the 2005-06 season.

In more news, Manchester City have begun to hunt for a temporary goalkeeper after the FA gave them permission to replace Joe Hart, who suffered an ankle injury in City’s 2-2 draw against Hull City. Hart had to consequently withdraw from England’s international friendly against Germany.

With Richard Martin also injured, Mark Hughes has only two keepers at his disposal- Kasper Schmeichel and Norwegian Tobias Johansen. City’s next two games are against Arsenal in the league and Schalke in the UEFA Cup.

Swedish goalie Magnus Hedman was approached by City, but he turned down the move.

Meanwhile Carlisle are targetting Newcastle’s young Dutch stopper Tim de Krul as Alnwick’s replacement.
