Werder Bremen repaid Bayern Munich for their 4-0 drubbing last season by stunning the German giants 5-2 at the Allianz Arena. In front of a capacity 69,000 crowd Bremen pumped in five, before Tim Borowski, signed from Bremen in the summer, pulled two back for Bayern. It was Bayern’s first home loss of the 2008-09 Bundesliga season, and the result comes days after their Champions League win over Steaua Bucharest.
Bremen, who had failed to break down Anorthosis Famagusta at home in the CL, had not been predicted by the pundits to win so dominantly, given their indifferent start to the season. Young Bremen midfielder Mezut Ozil created the first two goals, with Markus Rosenberg and Naldo duly converting. Ozil himself added the third before Claudio Pizarro and Rosenberg scored the fourth and fifth in the 54th and 67th minute respectively. Borowski, a second half substitute for Daniel Van Buyten, restored some Bayern pride by scoring two in a 15 minute period.
