Lyon 3-0 Toulouse first game of Ligue 1 2008-09 season

Lyon defeated Toulouse 3-0 in their first game of the 2008-09 French Ligue 1 season. Karim Benzema netted twice and new signing Jean II Makoun scored once, but the French giants suffered a blow as rightback Francois Clerc ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the first half. Medical tests have revealed that Clerc can be expected to be out of action for the next six months.

Alain Casanova opted to field a defensive lineup, but Lyon still found a way through in the first fifteen minutes, with Makoun heading home from a Juninho freekick. Both of Benzema’s goals came in the second half, one from Govou’s cross and the other after Toulouse keeper Carasso failed to clear Jean Alain Boumsong’s header clearly.

Benzema, who played for the French national team at Euro 2008, was also the top scorer in Ligue 1 last season.

And speaking of French strikers, here is something that will allow you to laugh a bit.

The Times
seems to think that Steve Pinau ( who moved to Hibs on loan from Genoa recently) is just two years old.

One of the comments already talks about the error, but it has not been rectified- not at the time of this post at least.
