Celtic win Scottish Premier League 2007-08

The 10th season of the Scottish Premier League, the first to be sponsored by Clydesdale Bank, ended on May 22, 2008 with Celtic winning their third consecutive title. Tied on points going into the final round of games, the Bhoys beat Dundee United thanks to Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink’s header but Walter Smith’s Rangers lost 0-2 at Aberdeen, ensuring that the title stayed at Celtic Park.

And after losing to Zenit St. Petersburg in the UEFA Cup final, Rangers will now train their attention on the upcoming Scottish Cup final against Queen of the South.

Celtic qualify directly for the Champions League Group stage. Rangers will enter the UCL at the second qualifying round, while Motherwell, who tragically lost captain Phil O’ Donnell this year, will play the UEFA Cup, also entering the competition at the second qualifying round.

Hibs have qualified for the Intertoto Cup.

Gretna, who were promoted from the first division last year, have been relegated from the SPL. Hamilton Academical will take their spot in the 2008-09 Scottish Premier League.

Small consolation for Rangers- Walter Smith was named Manager of the Year, and Carlos Cuellar bagged the Player of the Year award.

Scott McDonald was the highest scorer in the league, finding the back of the net 25 times for Celtic.
