FA Cup sixth round results

Here are the results from the sixth round of the FA Cup. Some stunning upsets, but that is what the FA Cup is all about- give the smaller teams an opportunity to shine on the big stage.

Manchester United 0-1 Portsmouth ( Sulley Muntari)

A repeat of last year’s fourth round clash which ended up 2-1 in favour of the Red Devils. The result this year was not the same. It left Sir Alex Ferguson furious.

The win ended United’s chance of a treble and propelled Pompey into the semifinals.

The winning goal was struck by Ghanian midfielder Sulley Muntari from the penalty spot. Referee Martin Atkinson pointed to the spot after Milan Baros had been brought down by Tomas Kuzcsak. The Polish goalkeeper was immediately given his marching orders by Atkinson, and Muntari made no mistake with the resulting spotkick. And with Chelsea out of the tournament, one has to admit that Portsmouth have a genuine chance of winning the 2008 FA Cup.
Barnsley 1-0 Chelsea ( Kayode Odejayi)

If somebody thought that Barnsley upsetting Liverpool was the shock result of the FA Cup, then look at this. Against all odds, the Tykes secured a 1-0 win to send the defending champions out of the FA cup and moved into the semifinals of the tournament for the first time since 1912.

Kayode Odejayi’s second half goal was enough for Barnsley, whose players were promised an £1,000 bonus if they upset the Blues.

Another cup exit for Chelsea, and with the Premiership being so competitive, Avram Grant may not be able to bring any silverware to Stamford Bridge this season.

  1. You know, I truly believe that this is the reason that Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to strip Sporting Lisbon of their two best plaers, Bruno Pereirinha and Miguel Veloso.
