As I write this, Liverpool have lost to Chelsea 0-1 in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal away, at Stamford Bridge.
If you are a Liverpool fan, there are many things in the game which would have disturbed you going into the second leg. First of all the fact, that Liverpool did not manage to score that all important away goal. A 2-1 or 3-2 or even 4-3 to Chelsea would have been a result Liverpool would have happily accepted. Now not only do they need to score, but they also need to prevent Chelsea from scoring. That is an easier task said than done. Michael Essien, such an important person for the Blues, will be back from suspension for the second leg for Chelsea.
Given Essien’s versatility and his crunching tackles, I’m not too sure whether Rafa will enjoy that. Also remember that Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano didn’t go for the ball in the first leg. Do you bring Momo Sissoko to get the damn ball in midfield? Also please play Jermaine Pennant. He is Liverpool’s best right winger at this moment, and Pool need balls to be floated in so that Chelsea are troubled. Cech and the defenders need to be tested. Ashley Cole might have some problems with Pennant’s pace and trickery down the right wing. And Cole can make mistakes when put under pressure, which any defender will mind you.Crouch starting? Maybe yes, but Bellamy can be a handful in the box, and can trouble Ferreira. Bolo Zenden IMO didn’t do too much in the first leg.
Agger also needs to be able to counter Drogba’s physical presence. I’m not sure whether Steve Finnan will be back, but if he does, he looks more settled than Alvaro Arbeloa. Finnan has been at the club for years, and he does know how Chelsea play.
Scoring 2 or more goals will be a difficult ask as I expect Chelsea to sit deep, absorb pressure and hit on the counter. A stalemate might be on the cards. Taking it into extra time might work Liverpool’s way, as Chelsea’s players will be mentally and physically tired ( they are in the running for 4 trophies, remember?)
Chelsea are playing better than Liverpool no doubt about it. If Liverpool play the way they did in the first half, they can kiss their chances goodbye. Some extra spark and motivation will be required, and I am sure that the Anfield crowd will be a factor as well.
