UEFA Champions League quarterfinal results

First Leg results from the quarterfinals of the 2006-07 CL

03 April

PSV Eindhoven 0-3 Liverpool ( Steven Gerrard, John Arne Riise, Peter Crouch)

This result virtually cancels any hopes of PSV making to the last four. Without Alex, it was always going to be difficult, and putting 3 or more past Liverpool at their fortress called Anfield isn’t easy.

AC Milan 2-2 FC Bayern Munchen (Andrea Pirlo, Kaka/ Daniel Van Buyten*2)

Milan took the lead through a first half strike from medio Pirlo. Van Buyten equalised 13 minutes from time, but Kaka restored Milan’s lead by scoring from the spot in the 84th minute. Van Buyten broke Italian hearts by scoring in the 90th minute, leaving Milan with a huge job to do at the Allianz Arena in a fortnight.

04 April

AS Roma 2-1 Manchester United ( Rodrigo Taddei, Mirko Vucinic/ Wayne Rooney)

Paul Scholes was in a mood for tackles at the Olimpico, and after conceding a few dangerously positioned freekicks, the former England medio got himself sent off for tackles on Wilhelmsson and Totti. Taddei gave Roma the lead, thanks to some lackadaiscal United defending. Rooney equalised, after some excellent work from Cristiano Ronaldo. Roma, however restored their lead in the 66th minute, after Van Der Sar palmed away Mancini’s fierce attempt. The ball landed at the feet of Mirko Vucinic, who showed excellent reflexes to slot it past the Dutch goalie.

Chelsea 1-1 Valencia ( David Silva/ Didier Drogba)

A stunning first half goal from young medio David Silva gave the visitors the lead. Chelsea’s strategy of playing long balls to Drogba worked, as the Ivory Coast forward took advantage of some uncertain goalkeeping from Canizares to score the equaliser in the 53rd minute.

Second leg results

10th April

Manchester United 7-1 AS Roma ( Carrick*2, Ronaldo*2, Rooney,Smith, Evra/ Daniele De Rossi)

United tore Roma apart. Whenever United came up to attack, they scored. Good result for SAF after the twin losses to Pompey and Roma ( QF first leg). Some people say that this is the greatest ever display by United in Europe? Your opinions? Was this win better than the comeback from 0-2 down against Juventus in the 1999 semifinal?

Valencia 1-2 Chelsea ( Morientes/ Shevchenko, Essien)

Chelsea pull a rabbit out of the bag again. Just when the match seemed ready to go into extra time, trust Michael Essien to come up with something brilliant.

11th April

Liverpool 1-0 PSV ( Peter Crouch)

Liverpool become side no.3 from England to book their place in the last four.

FC Bayern 0-2 AC Milan ( Seedorf, Inzaghi)

Once Milan scored those two goals, coming back was always going to be difficult for Bayern. Although they did put the Italians under pressure in the second half, they just couldn’t find the back of the net
