The word headbuttt and the name Materazzi now appear to be synonmous with each other. The Inter Milan defender, who got headbutted by French legend Zinedine Zidane in the final of the 2006 World Cup, was at the receiving end of another headbutt- this time from Sampdoria midfielder Gennaro Delvecchio.
Materazzi didn’t take kindly to Gennaro’s challenge on Inter keeper Julio Cesar in their Serie A game. Delvecchio promptly responded by headbutting him on his chin. The referee had no option but to send him off, and Sampdoria were down to 10 men in the 7th minute of the game.
Materazzi had provoked Zidane, but this time the Inter centreback said that he had done no such thing. Sampdoria manager Walter Novellino reportedly said that such behaviour should not come from a professional.
This is Materazzi’s second headbutt, and Inter went on to win the game 2-0 😛
Both Materazzi and Delvecchio have one club in common in their playing careers- A.C. Perugia
