West Ham United have signed Tottenham defender Calum Davenport for an undisclosed sum. The 24 year old is Alan Curbishley’s third major winter transfer window signing- the other two being Boa Morte and Quashie.
Davenport moved to Tottenham from Coventry in August 2004 for a fee of 3 million pounds. He has had spells on loan with the Hammers, Norwich and Southamption after joining Spurs. He was Young Player of the year in 2002-03 when he was with the Bantams.
He has been capped at U-21 level. This move from North London to East London may just give him the first team football that he has been desperately seeking. He was absent from the Spurs squad which beat Cardiff 4-0 in the FA third round replay.
West Ham are currently third from bottom, despite having beaten teams like Manchester United. The club have shipped in 36 goals from 22 games this season, and the signing of Davenport would surely have been made with an intention of reducing that number. Lucas Neill and Matt Upson have been linked with the Hammers too, but the bid for Upson has been rejected.
